Feel free to take it to other FTP or BITNET sites as you please. It contains the driver, TFM files for a boatload of Adobe fonts, a README file, and a sample LaTeX .sty file for including PostScript in a document. This should be considered an 'evaluation' version. There are several major improvements in the works (like re-encoding fonts to make more special characters available--I need to be able to typeset Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse). If anyone ports it to other systems (which shouldn't be too hard) or makes improvements, please send me your changes so I can stick them back in the official version. I am interested in coordinating an effort to make TeX and LaTeX completely usable with PostScript devices. This includes such things as making high quality PostScript outline fonts for math symbols & extensions, changing LaTeX's font handling, and so on. I've already started on a lot of this, and if anyone is interested in contributing ideas or work, please contact me. I think it's a shame that TeX output seems to be hardest on precisely those devices where it should be easiest. Clayton M. In general I find it to be a wonderful working environment. I have been able to create my own .sty files following the example given in the usual book format. However I have one problem with the placement of figures. Sometimes I want a single figure to take an entire page and therefore I use the p option in the figure environment. Often, LaTeX cannot determine a good place to put this figure and therefore it migrates to the end of the document taking all of the following figures with it. Having knowledge of the position of the pagebreak after which I want the figure to fall, I have inserted the figure at that point in the document hoping that since the figure will be the first entry in "recent contributions" it should naturally cause a pagebreak and insert the figure. No Luck! Does anyone know of a way to force the figure to occur at the next natural pagebreak? If you have any suggestions (I'm willing to try almost anything that sounds reasonable, please contact me directly as I'm facing deadlines but also post your response to TeXhax as I'm sure others would be interested. P. S. I went through the indexes for '86 and '87 (Thanks Barbara Beeton!) but I didn't have the issue #1 1986 which mentioned bugs in the figure placement algorithm. John ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Feb 88 08:45:44 EST From: beck@svax.cs.cornell.edu (Micah Beck) Subject: TeX graphics - Fig, Pic, Fig2* Excuse me for thinking out loud, but I've been spending some time working on getting graphics into TeX documents and issues of portablity. Before putting too much effort into this, I'd like whatever feedback I can get. I've been addressing two issues: how to get the output of a graphics editor (like MacDraw) into a TeX document, and how to get a fairly portable result. There are several ways of putting graphics into a TeX document (either with or without \specials) but they are NOT compatible at the TeX source level. A graphics editor called Fig produces an intermediate code which can be translated into PostScript, PiCTeX, or PIC and then included into TeX documents. Creating translators from this intermediate code (I call it Fig code) to any graphics implementation languages is pretty simple. True, Fig code cannot represent every figure, but it does pretty well. This is fine if you are using Fig (it runs under SunView) but that's kind of restrictive. I've hacked up a version of tpic which produces Fig code instead of tpic \specials. The output of this pic2fig program can be translated into implementation languages or edited using Fig. This means that a figure described using PIC can be included in TeX documents using PS, PiCTeX, or tpic, with extension to TeXtyle, epic, etc possible. If such package of translators were to gain wide acceptance, then a new graphics editor which produced PIC code could be translated almost universally into printable TeX code with an appropriate graphics implementation. There is one group working on an editor for X-Windows version 11, and who are considering some form of TeX-compatibility. Will this approach work? Would you use it if it made an X-11 graphics editor available? I'm not suggesting this as "the right" solution for TeX graphics, but one which can provide a lot of functionality right now. Here are three quick suggestions: 1. Perhaps the source of the problem can be found in the penultimate paragraph on page 183 of the LaTeX manual. 2. The clue to this problem is the line \par ->\if@newlist \else {\@@par }\fi in the log file, indicating that TeX is expanding \par, which has been defined to be a funny-looking macro. At various times, LaTeX redefines \par. This normally causes no problem, since the redefinition is temporary and \par gets redefined back to normal before any harm can come. However, the output routine can get called while \par is redefined, and if \par gets called then, strange things can happen. In this case, \par was called because TeX encountered a \vskip command (from the expansion of \smallskip) while in horizontal mode. The safest way to get around this problem is to use a \parbox command instead of the \vbox. (Remember that LaTeX commands like \parbox are designed to prevent such problems from occurring, but \vbox is not a LaTeX command.) Careful reading of latex.tex would suggest that a \@@par command before the \smallskip command might also work. 3. The number of the page containing the table of contents, like all page numbers, is obtained from the `page' counter. We will FTP to you, but we cannnot have you FTP from us. You must provide the necessary information to us. We cannot retry indefinitely if there are access problems so this type of delivery is not encouraged. Note that your check and license must be RECEIVED in our office before we can ship you the software -- ``in the mail'' is not sufficient. The announcement made in early August of this year regarding the availabity of updates was incorrect. We do not provide regular updates; see Article 5 of the license. If you wish to obtain a new release, we must charge you again to recover costs. If you are already a licensed user, you will not have to go through the licensing procedure a second time. The only exception to this policy is the following: You are entitled to a copy of the new software, if there is a new release, provided we receive your request within 90 days of the date we shipped your FIRST version of the software. The most significant thing I have found out is that there are "previewers" available for those who live right. I am about to mount a campaign to join the ranks of the privileged and, because whatever I get will probably have to last into the next century, I don't want to screw up. Of course, I do things other than Tex, but I would really like the opinion of this group. We are a VAX shop -- most of them VMS, a few Unix -- and, thus, it is much easier to obtain/support a VAXStation 2000, say, than a Sun or Apollo equivalent. Also important, is the fact that whatever I use must work very nicely with the existing VAX system, at best as a "cluster" node, at least as a DECNet node. As I have read the submissions to texhax, I have seen very few reference to VAXStations. The question is: Is there an argument to be made in favor of a Sun (or whatever) over a VAXStation?
