Does anyone know of a good document which explains the difference between "pxl", "gf", "pl", "tfm", etc. files in TeX version 2.0 font libraries? Specifically, which ones should be put in an accessible place for which purposes? The documentation supplied with the distribution (including README's) is not very detailed on this. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Mar 87 19:23:00 PST From: To: texhax@score.stanford.edu Subject: Problem with LaTeX \tableofcontents entries I am trying to write a paper using LaTeX with the LPLAIN format that is dated 86.5.17. I am using \documentstyle[12pt]{report} and the \tableofcontents command. The problem is that my section headers are short, e.g. \section{Introduction} and the table of contents entry does not come out right. There are not enough dots and no page number. The Contents page DOES get generated, albeit incorrectly. What am I doing wrong? I'm new to LaTeX so i'm sure it's a mistake i'm making. Please reply directly to me. Thanks for your help. To: peter%stat.ubc.cdn%ubc.csnet@RELAY.CS.NET tugboat 7#1, page 17, contained a note on where to find tex file descriptions. references are to previous issues of tugboat, and to various programs in the tex system (tex, metafont, and "texware"). also included is a "one-line" description of each of the files mentioned in the query, except for .pl. .pl files are the equivalent of .tfm files, but in "human-readable" "property list" format; they are not used directly by any processing or driver program, but are useful for investigating specific details of font metrics, patching errors temporarily, or for generating .tfm information for non-metafont fonts. i believe the detailed description can be found in the programs tftopl and pltotf. -- barbara beeton ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Mar 87 02:46:59 PST From: dwu@brahms.Berkeley.EDU (Daniel Wu) To: TeXHax@score.stanford.edu Subject: resume samples I would appreciate it if the TeX Users Group would send me some sample resumes done in TeX or LaTeX. As I'll be in the job market soon, I'd like to be able to present a slick good looking one, and I'd like to see how masterfully others have utilized TeX to prepare the finished product. As part of California State University, Fresno's 75th Anniversary Celebration, the Department of Computer Science is proud to bring the "Meta-Metafont" Exhibit from The Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography in New York to this campus' Henry Madden Library. The exhibit discusses the computer type-designing system Metafont developed by Stanford mathematician Donald Knuth. It is not technical, and contains text, examples, and discussion of the historical and philosophical implications of Metafont by Donald Knuth, Douglas Hofstadter, and others. The exhibit will be on the second floor of the library during the month of March. For more information, call Mr. Auernheimer at 209-294-4373. The original exhibit, at The Cooper Union, was reviewed by Alan Hoenig in TUGboat 7#2 (June 1986). (This is a travelling show, and other institutions interested in hosting it should call Ellen Lupton, Curator of the Lubalin Center, at 212-254-6300, ext. 211.) ------------------------------ Mail-From: BEETON created at 17-Mar-87 11:26:58 Date: Tue 17 Mar 87 11:26:58-PST From: TEX Guests Subject: Re: resume samples To: dwu@brahms.Berkeley.EDU the tex users group (which is independent of texhax) has essentially only the information published in tugboat. if my memory serves correctly, no resume style has been submitted to or described in tugboat. however, this is a subject of considerable interest, and a submission on the topic would be welcome. the editorial deadline for the next issue is may 18 (the first 1987 issue is now at the printer, and will be mailed at the end of march). anyone wishing to submit an item for publication, or wanting to find out about formatting an item for tugboat should send me a message to bnb@xx.lcs.mit.edu (arpanet) or bnb@mit-xx.arpa (from bitnet; sorry -- i don't know the protocols for other networks). information on the tex users group can be obtained by writing to tex users group p o box 9506 providence, ri 02940 or calling 401-272-9500, ext 232. -- barbara beeton editor, tugboat ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Mar 87 13:15:33 EST From: rezende%corwin.ccs.northeastern.edu@RELAY.CS.NET To: TeXhax@SCORE.STANFORD.EDU Subject: Tektronix driver? Does anyone know of a driver for previewing dvi files on a Tektronix 4014? Also, I'd like to produce camera-alignment corners on every page in LaTeX (like in the output routine of manmac.tex)? Is there a (simple?) way to achieve this? Thanks a priori. Result: GREAT increase in printer speed when using large characters. Also, DISAPPEARANCE of characters like \Delta. For some hysterical reason, \Delta and other u.c. Greek characters have been baptized by DK into Roman, into cmr10 etc.!! Adobe, not recognizing this conversion, puts \Delta et al NOT in Times-Roman. Textset/Arbortext, it seems to me, failed to accomodate this divergence. So, remapping cmr10 to Times-Roman can result in \Delta etal not being printed at all. How do other people make use of PS fonts most of the time, without losing characters like uc Greek when in math mode? Like by using \everymath to switch everything back to cm? Be explicit, please.
